Russia using ‘rule of fear’ to silence anti-war dissent, says UN independent human rights expert

Mariana Katzarova said in a new report to the UN General Assembly that over the past three years “thousands have been imprisoned on politically motivated charges, including treason, espionage, extremism and terrorism, often on fabricated evidence and in closed trials, with detainees ranging from children to the elderly.”

Gaza: Humanitarian response scaled up amid faltering ceasefire

‘Catastrophic’ Hurricane Melissa hours from landfall in Jamaica

Briefing reporters hours before Melissa is expected to make landfall in Jamaica,  a representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said that the category 5 system “will be the strongest on the planet this year” putting a million people at direct risk, “including families which are still recovering from Hurricane Beryl” which hit the island nation only 16 months ago.

‘Horrific’ violence as thousands flee Sudan’s El Fasher

Senior UN refugee agency (UNHCR) official in Sudan, Jacqueline Wilma Parlevliet, said there had been “significant outflow out of El Fasher into Tawila” – around 60 kilometres west of the city – which is already hosting around 650,000 displaced.
